Our lives

Jean-Philippe HERMAND

Breton for 1,000 years!

Born on a small, magic island known as Bréhat off the Britanny Coast, Jean-Philippe connects with every Bréton he meets, and relishes in their individualistic spirit. “JP” himself is fiercely independent. His hometown island Bréhat has a history of his family’s inhabitants since at least the 13th Century, if not perhaps as early as the 11th Century. It’s an island historically matriarchal, where the men were off months at a time fishing, so the family structure is led by street-smart mothers and women. JP learned this balance of men’s knowledge and wise women’s ways with an intellectually stimulated extended family.

Master Estimator

While always having an inquisitive scientist’s brain, seeking empirical knowledge and collecting data for brilliant new solutions, Jean-Philippe has also managed to become a Master Estimator over the years. Whether holding a suitcase and guessing precisely the weight of the contents, or being able to approximate water temperature to the degree, Jean-Philippe is constantly, expertly assessing scope, size and heft of any object or problem he confronts.  More seriously, having dived “body and soul” into trademark and dotcom database, Jean-Philippe is capable of assessing the percentage of available/unavailable trademarks or dotcom in a given corpus. His assessments are always close to reality… Hence, Master Estimator.

First Love

Studying linguistics and the communication of orangutans, JP created his first durable friendship of his young adult in Paris with a chimpanzee, Chloé. Focusing deeply on psycholinguistics with his expert research advisors, Jean-Philippe can walk you through the zoo at the Jardin Des Plantes in Paris, and regale you with tales of young student’s adventures in Paris in the 60’s. Don’t forget his first romance in the City of Lights — Doudou the orangutan.

Exploration of Worlds Old and New

Combining his love of mathematics, statistics and linguistics, Jean-Philippe developed his software in several versions over the years. He patiently evolved the tool (now at the core of Quensis) from a flexible database to a truly one-of-a-kind solution for the otherwise artisanal naming industry. His partner and now friend Delphine often says that when she met him, the software was comparable to a race car. Now, with all the innovation brought to the system in the past 3 years, it can be compared to a fighter plane.

Worlds Beyond

Jean-Philippe has the adventurous passion extreme in both his wonderful names in his worklife, and in his quest to travel with his family, his wife and two children, now both young adults. As that young and bold Parisian student would study hard, he also drove across the Sahara 4 times in the 1970’s, selling his French car to African cheiftains in Mali, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.

No matter where he is in the world, certainly Jean-Philippe is having a wonderfully scintillating, utterly brilliant and hilarious, conversation with someone you’d also enjoy meeting.
